Hadith Science – Introduction

Learning the knowledge of the dīn is a noble act of obedience.

The blessing and greatness of knowledge is that even if you don’t act upon it, you are still rewarded for it, as per your intention.

Our beloved Prophet ﷺ said:

من يرد الله به خيرا يفقهه في الدين.

“Whomsoever Allah wants good for him, He will give understanding of the dīn.”

At KOTI, we are pleased to present you with a simplified course to learn an Introduction to Hadith Science (أُصُول الحديث) which is termed usūl Hadith in Arabic.

This knowledge is a fundamental basis on which understanding of the how the traditions of the Prophet ﷺ were transmitted. It isn’t a study of Hadith, but the principles that underpin Hadith and Sunnah.

This course will help you:
Define the Science of Hadith (ʿUlūm al-Hadith) and explain its scope;
Explain how the compilation of Hadith began; and discuss objections about its authenticity;
Understand (broadly) the classification of Hadith and how that impacts on textual evidence;
Define an authentic (ṣaḥīḥ), and the conditions it must fulfil;
Understands who is considered a companion (ṣaḥābī) and who is a follower (tābiʿī);

Arming yourself with this basic introduction will put you at an advantage as you are more familiar with terms and usage of Islamic sources.
